TRAINEE, RESEARCHER
OR EXCHANGE STUDENTS PROGRAM
Temporary Visas Type I (VITEM-I) are
issued to foreign citizens
entering Brazil as:
A – researchers, scientists or professors
who come to Brazil as members of a cultural, technological
or scientific mission, provided that no income
is derived from a Brazilian source, (payment of
daily travel allowances and scholarships excepted)
B – interns provided always that the internship
is practical part of vocational or university
studies
C – amateur athletes under 21 years of
age engaged in intensive sports training in Brazilian
institutions without remuneration for competing
D – technicians, service providers, volunteers,
specialists, scientist, researchers who will work
under an international cooperation agreement recognized
by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations
E – unpaid trainees in the operation or
maintenance of equipment or machines made in Brazil
F – exchange students.
GENERAL DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS
(ANY CATEGORY ABOVE)
A – Passport valid for a minimum of six
months
B –One recent 3 cm x 4 cm photograph, front
view
C– One visa application form (click
here to fill in the form). Please disregard
the error message about the website’s security
certificate. Click at “Continue to this
website (not recommended)”.
Fill in the form.
. Click "SEND" to receive your processing
number and receipt.
. Print the receipt.
. Attach your photograph
. Sign the receipt.
. Bring the duly completed and signed receipt,
the original documentation, passport and payment.
The visa application form filled out
online is valid for one month only. If you apply
after that period, it will be necessary to fill
out another form.
D – Certificate of birth issued by Dutch
municipal authorities (international model)
E – Proof of holding means sufficient to
support himself in Brazil (minimum € 665,00
per month) or letter of the institution in Brazil
taking responsibility for the applicant’s
maintenance and return trip to Brazil
F – Certificate of residence (international
model) issued by the Dutch authorities stating
that the applicant has been residing in the Netherlands
for the past twelve months.
G – Certificate of good behaviour (international
model) issued by the Dutch Ministry of Justice
within 90 days from delivery to the Consulate.
Issuance by Dutch authorities may take up to 4
weeks.

Specific documentation requirements are stated
on the reverse.
On a reciprocity basis, first entry into Brazil
must be made within 90 days after the visa has
been issued for passport holders of the following
countries: Angola, Bahrain, Cambodia, China, Gabon,
Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Laos,
Lybia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Paraguay, Philippines,
Portugal, Thailand, Tunisia and Switzerland.
Maximum duration of the VITEM-I visa is two years
for applicants under category A and D (renewable),
one year (non-renewable) under categories B,C
and F and 60 days (renewable for another 60 days)
under category E above. Extensions (whenever possible)
can be applied for at the Department of Federal
Police, in Brazil, at least 30 days before the
visa expires.
VITEM-I holders who are to stay in Brazil for
more than 90 days MUST register in person at the
Department of Federal Police in Brazil within
the first 30 days after their arrival (Keep a
copy of your visa application form duly stamped
by the Consulate-General for presentation to the
immigration authorities in Brazil, if required).
All Brazilian documents must be originals or
copies notarized in Brazil.
CONSULAR FEES
A charge of € 54,00 is applicable per visa.
An additional processing fee of €
135,00 is charged to visa applications
presented by U.S. citizens in reciprocity for
identical fee paid by Brazilian citizens who apply
for a visa to the United States of America. British
subjects will be subject to a € 139,50 processing
fee when the validity of their visas is over 180
days, on a reciprocity basis. All applications
not submitted by the passport holder in person
are subject to a handling fee of € 18,00
in addition to any other applicable fee. All
fees are payable either by debit card (PIN) or
in cash. Credit cards and cheques are not accepted.
DOCUMENTATION RETURNED BY MAIL
For documentation returned by mail applicants
should provide the Consulate-General with a pre-paid
self-addressed envelope of suitable size. Updated
information on post charges is available at Dutch
Post offices.
THE CONSULATE-GENERAL CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE
FOR LOST OR DELAYED MAIL.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS PER CATEGORY
A – Researchers, scientists and
professors who come to Brazil as members of a
cultural, technological or scientific mission,
provided that no income is derived from a Brazilian
source (daily travel allowances and scholarships
excepted)
– A copy of the ordinance (portaria) of
the Minister of Science and Technology of Brazil
as published in the Brazilian Official Gazette,
in which it is stated:
a) Full name of the foreigner(s) involved in the
activities;
b) Name of the research;
c) Name of the institution to which the foreigner
is related;
d) Name of the Brazilian sponsoring institution.
Or alternatively:
- If the applicant is to work in Brazil for an
international organization, such as the Inter-American
Development Bank, the World Bank and the Corporación
Andina de Fomento, as part of a project approved
by the Brazilian government, the applicant must
produce a letter from the Ministry of Science
and Technology of Brazil or from the institution
related to it and responsible for the project
in Brazil, that is, a foundation, a state-owned
company or a state university. The letter should
state:
a) Full name of the foreigner involved in the
activities;
b) Name of the research;
c) Name of the international organization by which
the foreigner will be paid;
d) Name of the Brazilian institution for which
the foreigner will work.
- If the applicant is to work in Brazil under
a scholarship granted by a Brazilian governmental
institution (such as CNPq, CAPES or FINEP), the
applicant must produce a letter from the sponsoring
institution in which it should be stated:
a) Full name of the foreigner involved in the
activities;
b) Name of the research;
c) Name of the institution that grants the scholarship;
d) Name of the Brazilian institution for which
the foreigner will work.
B. Interns provided always that the internship
is practical part of vocational or university
studies
– Written confirmation of the applicant’s
acceptance by the Brazilian university or company.
No employment relationship between instution and
intern is allowed under this visa. Interns may
not receive wages from the university or company
(scholarships are allowed).
– An introductory/intermediary letter from
a recognised student exchange organization- having
its headquarters in Brazil (e.g. IAESTE do Brasil,
AIESEC, FGV), or an international cooperation
organisation or cooperation department of a Brazilian
Ministry. This requirement does not apply, if
the internship is to take place in a governmental
institution.
C. Amateur athletes under 21 years of
age engaged in intensive sports training in Brazilian
institutions without remuneration for competing
– Agreement between the alien and the Brazilian
institution
D. Technicians, service providers, volunteers,
specialists, scientist, researchers who will work
under an international cooperation agreement recognized
by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations
– Copy of the international agreement under
which the applicant will work
– Proof of professional expertise in keeping
with the work to be done in Brazil
– Letter from the institution in Brazil
stating activities to be undertaken by the applicant,
its location and duration, and that the applicant
will not receive any remuneration from a Brazilian
source.
E. Trainees in the operation or maintenance
of equipment or machines made in Brazil
– Letter from the company with headquarters
in Brazil describing the activities to be undertaken
by the applicant, its location and duration.
– Proof that the applicant will be remunerated
by a source abroad
F. Exchange students
– Copy of the act of incorporation of the
exchange student institution.
– Copy of certificate of registration of
the exchange student institution at the Brazilian
National Legal Persons Registry (CNPJ).
– Letter from Brazilian institution stating
the purpose of the trip, duration and place of
activities to be undertaken.
– Letter from school in Brazil confirming
the enrolment of the student and stating the duration
of the studies.
– Complete name, address and qualifications
of persons hosting the student in Brazil (“host
family”).
G. Minors of 18 years of age: applicable
to categories B, C and F above
– Letter of consent signed by father and
mother or guardian (proof of guardianship required),
for applicants younger than 18 years old when
travelling alone. If travelling with one parent
only, letter of consent of the other, non-accompanying
parent is required. Please check with the Consulate-General
if specimen signature and seal of notary public
are already on file.
- Minors are exempt from certificate of good behaviour.
UPON SUBSMISION OF COMPLETE DOCUMENTATION
TO THE CONSULATE-GENERAL, PLEASE ALLOW A MINIMUM
OF FIVE WORKING DAYS FOR THE ISSUANCE OF VISA.
ADD A MINIMUM OF TWO WORKING DAYS FOR PASSPORTS
RETURNED BY MAIL.
